San Marino

A history that dates back to 301 A.D.

In the Republic of San Marino, dedication and devotion to the saint who, according to legend founded the republic, is widespread and heartfelt. The legend claims that this stonecutter from the island of Arbe in Dalmatia climbed Mount Titano and founded a small community of Christians here in order to flee from the religious persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian.
Urbino

Raffaello Sanzio was born in Urbino on 28th March 1483 in a building that stands on the left of the steep slope leading from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazzale Roma. The son of Magia Ciarla (of whom little is known) and Giovanni Santi, a poet and artist who had worked on several occasions for the court of the Montefeltro family, from a very early age Raffaello had a certain familiarity with court life and with art, probably conditioned by his father.
Gradara

We could begin our story like this but it isn’t a fairytale, it’s a true story.

Paolo and Francesca really existed; they are not romantic characters like Romeo and Juliet who were born of the creative genius of William Shakespeare.
San Leo

Under Berengario II, this ancient town, which was the main town of the county of Montefeltro (from its origin to its decline) and the scene of numerous military battles for about two-thousand years, became capital of Italy (962-964). Saint Leone (4th century A.D.) was its evangelizer.

The town hosted both Dante (“I went to San Leo...") and Saint Francis of Assisi, who received Mount della Verna as a gift from Count Orlando di Chiusi nel Casentino (1213). The room where the two men met can still be found here.

The fortress became a prison during the Papal reign over the area and both Count Cagliostro, who died within its walls in 1795, and Felice Orsini (1844) were imprisoned here.
I Luoghi dell’Anima (The Places of the Soul) - Tonino Guerra

Born of an idea by the poet Tonino Guerra, who wanted to create a “museum of flavours that would help us touch the past” this garden of forgotten fruits was built in Pennabilli in 1990 thanks to the work of the Mostra Mercato Nazionale d'Antiquariato (National Antiques’ Fair) and Amici della Valmarecchia (Friends of the Marecchia Valley) associations and the local tourist board, in collaboration with the municipal administration.

It stands in a magnificent position in the old town centre, in an area that had been abandoned for years and had formerly been the garden of the monastery of the missionary brothers.
